October Homeschool Day

This month’s theme is Farming, Fall Leaves, and Preparing for Winter. Please choose one activity for each time slot offered.

10:00 am - 10:50 am – Autumn Leaves

Why do leaves change color in the fall? As a group we will all do a science experiment to find out! Participants will then separate into the sessions they have chosen. 

Session 1: “Leaf Man” by Lois Ehlert

After reading “Leaf Man” by Lois Ehlert, participants will go on a leaf hunt and then make their very own leaf creation.

Session 2: The Art and Science of Leaf Rubbing

After gathering some leaves, participants will make beautiful leaf rubbing crayon resists and label the different parts of the leaf as we work.

11:00 am - 11:50 am – Celebrating Farmer’s Day (10/12)

Session 1 : The Animals of Farmer Jones

October 12th is Farmer’s Day. In celebration, let’s visit the farmstead and learn all about the Farm. Participants in this session will:

•  Read “The Animals of Farmer Jones”
• Explore the different types of food our animals eat with sensory bins
• Visit with our sheep and chickens
• Make a pattern block farm animal to take home

Location: Farmstead, please dress appropriately for the weather

Session 2 : Search for a Source: “All in Just One Cookie”

Have you ever wondered where your food comes from? Does it just appear at the grocery store? Without farms and farmers, we would definitely be very hungry! Participants in this session will learn where the ingredients found in just one chocolate chip cookie come from and then have the opportunity to make some chocolate chip cookies to enjoy or take home.

Notice: Baking and ingredient handling will take place in this session, please be aware of potential allergens.

12:00 pm - 12:50 pm – Heritage Crafts : Preparing for Winter

Session 1: Rag Rugs

Floors could get quite cold during the long winter months. Now was the time to take old clothing scraps to make rugs for the floor. Participants in this session will be making their own mini rag rugs to take home.

Session 2: Candle Dipping

As winter approaches, the nights get longer. During a time where there was no electricity, Pioneers were required to light their houses with candles. Participants in this session will have the opportunity to make their own candle(s) to take home.
