Christopher R. Schlichte Memorial Exhibition
As spring begins to blossom throughout the Buffalo Niagara region, we are reminded of this time of year as the season of rebirth and bloom. This Exhibition of photographs taken by Christopher R. Schlichte, and curated in his memory, stands representative of the ability of the artistic spirit to transcend death to exist in life eternal.
Born May 11, 1947, Christopher moved to the Buffalo area at the age of ten. He attended St John the Baptist for his elementary education, Herbert Hoover during his Junior High years, and graduated from Kenmore West Senior High in 1965 before enlisting in the Army. Christopher served in the Vietnam War as a triage medic with the 36th Field Evac. in Vung Tau. Eventually, he would return to the Buffalo region once more, where he bar kept and managed popular bars such as the Locker Room and the Hotel California. He passed away in 2014, following a cancer diagnosis. It is with this Exhibition that we celebrate his immense passion for the art of photography.
This selected body of work spans four decades, each piece passionately captured as Christopher embarked upon an exploratory journey throughout North and Southeastern portions of the United States. Each shot captures the awe inspiring magic of the photographer’s eye and inspires within a desire to look more closely at the beauty of the world around us.
Our deepest thanks to John R. Simon for his generosity and kindness in providing this body of exceptional work for display in the Community Art Gallery. A selection of Christopher’s photography will be for sale the evening of the opening, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the mission of Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village. Photographs range in size from 11 x 14 to 4 x 6.
